Chile: Death toll rises from deadly forest fires – 251 active outbreaks

At least 16 are dead from more than 250 forest fires raging in central Chilein the middle of a heat wave, according to the latest report announced by the authorities.

Of the 251 active outbreaks, 80 remain out of control, the National Agency for Prevention and Response to Disasters (Senapred) said.

In addition to the 16 people who lost their lives, 24 others were injured while 88 homes were destroyed.

Among the dead, as reported by the Athens News Agency, are the Bolivian pilot and the Chilean engineer of a helicopter, which crashed while participating in the firefighting efforts.

Chile is simultaneously hit by an extreme heat wave, with temperatures reaching 40ºC. Authorities fear the conditions could lead to a repeat of the tragedy of 2017, when a massive wildfire killed 11 people, completely destroyed more than 1,500 homes and burned hundreds of thousands of acres of forest.
