China: 10 dead from torrential rains

Ten people lost their lives in the province of Juan in China and 286,000 were evacuated from their homes due to heavy rainfall.

The rains, which began on June 1, drove authorities to evacuate some 286,000 people from their homes, the state-run New China News Agency reported Wednesday. More than 2,700 houses were damaged, many were completely destroyed.

According to the latest official report, as of yesterday, 10 people had lost their lives and three were missing, Li Dacian, a local official in charge of flood control, told the agency.

“The strong rainfall caused a large increase in the water level of rivers and lakes. “The whole province, at all levels, has mobilized and is doing everything to prevent it,” the provincial government said in a press release issued today.

Historical landslide levels

The rains hit almost all of Hunan and some meteorological stations recorded “historic levels” of precipitation, according to New China.

The agency clarified that tents, rollaway beds, food and clothes were distributed in the affected areas, AFP reported, citing APE-MPE.

In 2021, China experienced the worst floods of the last ten years, especially in its central part, and mourned over 300 dead.

Most died in floods and mudslides in the hit city of Chenzhou, where many motorists were trapped in their tunnels in flash floods.
