China’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday it had presented “stern representations” to the United States after President Joe Biden said US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.
“China reserves the right to take all necessary measures in response to activities that tear the country apart,” said Mao Ning, a ministry spokesman, at a regular press conference.
“There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is part of it, and our government is the only legitimate government in China,” Mao said.
Biden’s statement came during an interview on the CBS 60 Minutes program, broadcast on Sunday (18). Asked if US forces would defend the island, he replied: “Yes, if indeed there was an unprecedented attack.”
Asked to clarify whether he meant that, unlike Ukraine, US forces would effectively defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, the president replied “yes”.
