The possibility of a resurgence of the coronavirus in China within the next two to three months according to a government scientist, as he claims 80% of the Asian country’s population has fallen ill.
Mass movements of people during the current Chinese New Year holiday season may spread the pandemic, increasing infections in some areas, but a second wave coronavirus is unlikely in the short term, Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said on the social networking platform Weibo.
Nearly 60,000 people with Covid have died in hospitals since January 12about a month after China suddenly scrapped its zero-Covid policy, according to government figures.
However, experts argue that this number does not fully reflect reality because it does not include those who die at home and because many doctors have said they are discouraged from citing Covid as a cause of death.
