China strongly opposes US arms sales to Taiwan and calls on Washington to withdraw them immediately, the Chinese Defense Ministry said on Friday (7).
The ministry said it had already filed a complaint with the United States about the matter.
“China’s armed forces will continue to strengthen their military training and exercises and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added in a statement.
The US State Department has approved the sale of spare and repair parts for F-16 fighter jets to Taiwan for an estimated $80 million, the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency said on Wednesday.
The sale will help improve Taiwan’s security, maintain political stability and military balance, and support economic progress in the region, the Pentagon said.
Taiwan said the sale, which is expected to be finalized in July, will increase its air force’s combat and defense needs.
