China: Outbreak worsens in Tianjin city while Omicron spreads to other areas

The northern Chinese city of Tianjin announced an increase in COVID-19 cases today as it intensified efforts to contain the outbreak that had led to the spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant to another city.

Omicron poses new challenges to China’s strategy to eradicate outbreaks immediately month.

The Volkswagen Group announced the closure of a vehicle plant it jointly manages with the FAW Group in Tianjin, as well as a spare parts plant on Monday due to the boom.

Tianjin, about 100 kilometers from the capital Beijing, announced yesterday 41 cases of local transmission with confirmed symptoms, compared to 33 a day earlier, according to data from the National Health Commission.

Dalian in the northeastern part of the country also announced that a man from Tianjin had tested positive for Omicron, according to local officials. According to the same source, the epidemiological situation is “largely under control”.

Anyang in the central province of Henan yesterday recorded 43 cases of local transmission with symptoms, after two Omicron infections on Monday. Tracking showed that the outbreak was started by a student from Tianjin.

Cases in Tianjin and Anyang are very small compared to outbreaks in many other countries, although the number of local Omicron infections is unclear. However, officials impose restrictions on travel in and out of these cities.

Several cities across China have quarantined those who recently visited the two cities. Beijing is among the cities urging citizens not to travel during the Chinese New Year holidays.

Citing the threat of Omicron and the need for the Olympics to be safe, officials in the capital are encouraging telework for those living in the Beijing suburbs. No new deaths were reported yesterday, with the death toll since the virus was first identified in China two years ago at 4,636.

Zhang Wenhong, head of the COVID-19 response team in Shanghai, said today that the city’s public health clinic was facing a record number of cases coming from other areas.

The imported infections in Shanghai during the first 10 days of the month have already exceeded the whole of December, according to Reuters calculations. How many of them concern Omicron has not been clarified yet.

China has suspended other flights from the United States following an increase in the number of infected passengers. Strict measures against local outbreaks include the punishment of officials, while 11 people were called to account yesterday in Anyang for failing to adequately control the virus.

Authorities in the city of Xi’an today ordered two hospitals to suspend operations for three months due to failures and failures to provide health care during the outbreak. One of the hospitals apologized for the inelastic epidemiological tests that resulted in the delayed treatment of a patient who suffered a heart attack and died. The story of a pregnant woman who lost her unborn baby after waiting for two hours outside another hospital sparked outrage among Chinese social media users and led to the punishment of local officials.
