China performed 55 space launches in 2021. This is a new record

Today, December 30, China successfully launched the last Changzheng 3B rocket into space this year and set a new national record for the number of launches per year. In a statement, the China Corporation for Space Science and Technology (CASC) said that 55 launches were carried out in China this year, ahead of the rest of the space powers. In second place is the United States with 45 launches, in third place is Russia with 24 launches.

It is worth saying that China managed to break its own record at the end of October with its 40th launch. The previous best results were achieved in 2018 and 2020 (39 starts). In the entire history of space exploration, the absolute record holder for the number of launches per year is the Soviet Union (108 launches in 1982). In second place is the United States (77 launches in 1966). The best result of Russia is 55 launches in 1992.

This year, Russia made 24 launches, although there was also the 25th – a test launch of the Angara-A5 heavy rocket from the Plesetsk cosmodrome. Nevertheless, Roskosmos has something to brag about. The Russian corporation managed to complete 76 launches in a row without accidents. The last time the launch of the Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft was unsuccessful was on October 11, 2018 due to the accident of the Soyuz-FG launch vehicle in the second minute of the flight. Fortunately, the emergency rescue system worked, and the crew returned safely to Earth.
