Chiquita ordered to pay $38.3m to families of men killed by far-right group in Colombia

Chiquita Brands International must pay $38.3 million to the families of eight men killed by a paramilitary group in Colombia, a Florida jury ruled Monday. Chiquita was ordered in 2007 by a US court to pay a $25 million fine to drop criminal charges related to her collaboration with the far-right paramilitary group AUC. The company had admitted its guilt, claiming that it paid protection to this organization from 2001 to 2004, in exchange for guarantees for the safety of its workers. The jury in the lawsuit filed in federal court in Florida said in its verdict yesterday that Chiquita knowingly provided substantial assistance to AUC, monetary and otherwise, to the extent that a risk was created.
