The choice of escape route to repatriate Brazilians from Lebanon amid the conflict in the Middle East could have significant diplomatic implications, according to ESPM International Relations professor Leonardo Trevisan.
In an interview with Live CNN the expert highlighted that the Brazilian government’s decision will send a clear signal about its position on the international scene.
According to Trevisan, the selection of the route for the evacuation of Brazilian citizens is not only a logistical issue, but also a political decision with the potential to influence the country’s diplomatic relations.
“The route taken to get Brazilians out of there will send out a signal”, stated the professor, emphasizing the importance of caution in this process.
Diplomatic impact of the choice of route
The expert explained that different route options can convey different messages about Brazil’s position in the conflict: “If we use a route via Europe, via the United States, we are giving a very clear signal of our choice. If we use the route through the Syrian airport under Russian protection, we are sending another signal.”
Trevisan also pointed to a possible “duel of views” within Itamaraty itself regarding how Brazil should position itself in relation to the Middle East.
He identified two main currents: a more traditional one, which defends a more equidistant stance on the conflict, and another more politically engaged.
Divergent views in the Brazilian government
The professor highlighted that these different perspectives can be observed in the government structure itself.
He mentioned President Lula’s speech at the UN General Assembly as an example of the more traditional vision, while Celso Amorim’s presence in the background could represent a more engaged approach.
“Even on the Brazilians’ escape route, even on this route, these two visions will appear”, concluded Trevisan, highlighting the complexity of the situation and the importance of the Brazilian government’s decision at this critical moment.
