Hurricane Helene will be among the deadliest hurricanes to hit the continental United States in the last 50 years while the storm’s death toll, which already stands at more than 115, will likely continue to rise.
Hurricane Katrina tops the list, with at least 1,833 deaths caused by the storm and subsequent flooding. Hurricane Ian, which hit southeast Florida in 2022, caused 150 direct and indirect deaths.
Helene is currently third on the list, already surpassing 2017’s Hurricane Irma, which killed 92 people in the US, mainly in Florida.
Hurricane Harvey and Storm Sandy resulted in 60 and 75 deaths in the US, respectively.
The list only includes hurricanes from the U.S. mainland, so Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico is not included.
