Chris Rock says he was invited to present the Oscar in 2023 after he got slapped by the actor Will Smith while delivering an award at this year’s ceremony
Rock, who has hosted the Oscars in 2005 and 2016, revealed the invitation during a stand-up show in Phoenix on Sunday, according to The Arizona Republic.
He reportedly told the crowd that he declined, along with a Super Bowl commercial. He said that Smith’s slap “hurt.”
“He’s bigger than I am,” Rock said. “The state of Nevada would not sanction a fight between me and Will Smith.”
THE CNN reached out to Rock’s rep and the Academy for comment.
Smith took the Oscars stage and slapped the comedian in the face after he made a joke about Smith’s wife’s shaved head.
Jada Pinkett Smith suffers from hair loss due to alopecia, an autoimmune condition that can lead to hair loss.
Smith was banned from Academy-related events for 10 years and apologized. In a video last month, the actor said he was “deeply sorry” for the incident.
“I reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he’ll be in touch,” Smith said.
“Then I’ll tell you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here when you’re ready to talk.”
