Actress Christina Applegate, 53, revealed that she noticed the first signs of multiple sclerosis (MS) while filming the series “Disque Amiga para Matar”. The star was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system in 2021, but recalled a specific episode during the filming of the series’ pilot, which aired between 2019 and 2022.
On her podcast, “MeSsy,” which she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler — who also faces the condition — Christina told the show’s director, Liz Feldman, that the scene in which her character, Jen Harding, ran through a field was a turning point.
“I remember falling that day. Hello, first sign of MS! So, without wanting to let everyone down, but there I was,” he declared.
The director also recalled what happened: “I remember you losing your balance a few times while we were filming the pilot. It was very difficult to understand what was going on because, you know, I remember one time when it was very late at night. We had probably been filming for 14 or 15 hours… It seemed completely reasonable that anyone would be breaking down.”
Christina confirmed: “It was multiple sclerosis.”
The actress’ diagnosis was announced in 2021, shortly before filming for the Netflix production ended. In a previous interview on Kelly Clarkson’s show in December 2022, Christina stated that filming the final season helped her process the shock of the news.
“The beauty of ‘Disque Amiga’ is that it gave me, in some ways, a strange opportunity to deal with this. I didn’t need to be ‘on’ all the time, nor did I need to make all the jokes. I could break down in a scene. And it was, like, myself. It was my soul really collapsing, unfortunately, in front of the world. But in a way, it was cathartic and beautiful.”
Recently, Christina opened up about the intense pain she faces amid her fight against the condition. “I lie in bed screaming — like, the sharp pains, the tiredness, the tight feeling. Sometimes, I can’t even pick up my phone because now the disease has advanced to my hands, so I try to pick up the phone or the remote control to turn on the TV, and sometimes, I can’t even hold them. I can’t open bottles at the moment”, he said.
