Christine Lagarde: “central banks are unlikely to buy bitcoin”

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said that she does not consider bitcoin as a currency at all, and even more so as a world reserve currency.

During a conference hosted by The Economist, Lagarde stressed that central banks in various countries are unlikely to buy bitcoin as a reserve currency for the foreseeable future:

“This is extremely unlikely. It is so unlikely that there is nothing to talk about. ”

Lagarde said in January that bitcoin is an extremely speculative instrument and is often used for money laundering. In doing so, she recognizes the benefits of digital currencies, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

The ECB President noted that the pandemic has spurred the demand for digital currencies and the adoption of such assets. She also said that the launch of the digital euro could take place within four years.

Note that the development of the digital euro continues. In December, the Bank of France and some Italian banks announced testing of the European digital currency.
