Citizenship Action prepares food donations for the Yanomami

The NGO Ação da Cidadania, a reference for decades in the fight against hunger in Brazil, starts this Monday (23) to deliver 10 tons of food to the Yanomami indigenous people in Roraima. It is an emergency action, articulated by the organization in partnership with the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger (MDS).

The baskets were assembled this Sunday (22nd) in Boa Vista, capital of Roraima, and join another 85 tons of food that the Ministry intends to collect and distribute on an emergency basis in the Yanomami territory.

Founded by sociologist Hebert de Souza, better known as Betinho, Ação da Cidanania is one of the main entities fighting hunger in the country and has been operating since 1993. The entity plans, after sending emergency food, the creation of a permanent aid campaign for Yanomami.

The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), traveled this Saturday (21) to Roraima, where he visited Yanomami indigenous people. After the visit, Lula stated that he should take doctors to the village to assist the indigenous people in the communities.

“I told the minister that health should go there in the village and not wait for them to come here in the city. One of the ways to resolve this is for us to set up a health service in the villages”, said the president.

The Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, classified the situation of the indigenous people as a health emergency and confirmed that she should send doctors to the village on Monday (23).
