The Astronomical Chat observatory recorded 1,871 electrical discharges from Sunday night (22) until the early hours of Thursday (26) in Santa Maria (RS), about 300 kilometers from Porto Alegre. Of this total, 1,315 lightning strikes were recorded between yesterday (25) and today (26).
Lightning is detected by radio frequency, with a sensor that captures lightning up to 40 kilometers away. The observatory also has a camera system for visually recording electrical discharges and other phenomena.
In the video, it is possible to see a composition of the main records from last night (25).
In the same period, the observatory recorded 67 mm of accumulated rain, until 10 am this Thursday.
