Claudia Costin: Milton Ribeiro’s MEC had no “appetite” to manage education

THE CNN Specialist in education Claudia Costin said, this Wednesday (22), that the preventive detention of Milton Ribeiro, former Minister of Education, shows that in the portfolio “there was no appetite to manage educational policy” during his administration.

“There are practically entire academic years of closed schools. The children did not become literate, they had the most varied difficulties, and the MEC would have had a lot to do in the Milton Ribeiro period”, said the CNN Specialist .

Ribeiro was arrested this Wednesday, amid investigations that investigate whether he, while he was in charge of the portfolio, practiced influence peddling and corruption for the release of public resources from the National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE).

According to Costin, the FNDE is “fundamental” in the structure of the Ministry of Education, working in the distribution of textbooks to public schools and supporting the construction of daycare centers in poorer municipalities, for example.

To the CNN Specialist it will be necessary to “review the operating model of the FNDE in the future”, to ensure that there are no cases of corruption in the body.

“It’s very tempting for political physiologists to have this kind of ‘fee paid’ to expedite resources (from the fund),” said Costin.
