Claudia Costin: Post-pandemic scenario is not favorable for homeschooling adoption

THE CNN Specialist in Education Claudia Costin spoke, this Saturday (21), about the home education project approved by the Chamber of Deputies last Wednesday (18) and which is going to be voted on in the Federal Senate.

The bill regulates the practice of basic home education – the so-called homeschooling – in the country. The student must be enrolled annually and have the option for homeschooling formalized by parents or legal guardians with an accredited educational institution. The matter, however, has generated debate and divided the opinion of experts.

For Claudia Costin, the homeschooling in itself is not a problem, with more than 60 countries adopting the model, but the crisis in national education. The specialist questioned the urgency given to the project after two years of a pandemic, which caused several schools to remain closed, causing a lag in the educational system.

“We have children, in large numbers, from fifth to sixth grade, who are illiterate. With two years out of school, with parents on the street looking for some source of income and trying to learn without some equipment and connectivity, the last thing we have to think about right now is homeschooling“, he stated.
