Juan Carlos is back in Spain, but he will not stay there

He spent two years in exile, now spends 5 days in Spain and then returns to the Emirates. There is no place in the country for him to Juan Carlos, king emeritus who cannot sleep in the official palaces of the Crown. The first king of Spain after Franco’s dictatorship returned not landing directly at Madrid airport, but in Galicia.

To receive him and to accompany him in these days with the nautical club Sanxenxo only the eldest daughter Elena, none of the current ruling family, Felipe VI and his wife Letizia and daughters Leonor and Sofia, and not even Juan Carlos’s wife Sofia. When, two years ago, he left the country it was evident that there was no way back: the image and economic damage done with his gallant adventures, with the big game and with the financial scandals (capital in tax havens, bribes in Saudi Arabia for a railway line).

The return is only for a regatta with the beloved sailing ship, the Bribón. The images are of the sea and some photos with the people following the regatta. The travel program, from Abu Dhabi and back, was established by the Royal House together with the socialist government of Pedro Sánchez. Most of the government would be in favor of a downsizing of what is already a parliamentary monarchy.

After the passage in the boat the king emeritus, whose pending charges were filed by the judiciary which declared him not liable to prosecution, on Monday he will be in Madrid. He will have lunch at the Zarzuela Palace with Felipe, Letizia and his wife Sofia. He will not stay overnight at Zarzuela and in no other palace of the Bourbon family. He will leave the same day for the Emirates and the previous night will be the guest of Pedro Campos, president of the Real Club Nautico «Juan Carlos I».

Juan Carlos abdicated in 2014 and for two years, since August 2020, he has no longer lived in his country. in 2021 it paid off its debt with the Spanish Revenue Agency, paying around 5 million euros. There remains a cause that the Spanish monarchy cannot tolerate: the one set up by the former historical lover, Corinna Larsen, a businesswoman and ex-wife of Prince Johann Casimir zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn. The woman claims compensation for harassment and threats by the Spanish secret services.
