Claudia Laricchia: “The future of the environment begins with our fork”

How long did the training last?
«Five days full immersion with different teachers including the number two in the White House at the time of Obama. There were scientific modules related to the atmosphere, Co2, what generates change and how to mitigate it. Then there were modules on how to organize petitions or letters to raise awareness of public entrances. I myself have put this into practice by opposing the Municipality of Foggia which wanted to release thousands of plastic balloons into the air in the “night of desires” ».

At a certain point his path meets that of Sara Roversi and of Future Food Institute.
«For me it was a tailored suit, it was an enabling platform for my ideas and proposals. Also I think it was a good story between women. The president, Sara Roversi, is 40 years old and an entrepreneur with a very philanthropic vision. FFI is headquartered in Bologna, Tokyo, Silicon Valley and Pollica. Sara and I couldn’t be more different: we only agree that we trust each other. In our diversity, however, hurricanes have been created ».

How about your project for the Tour of the World, which later became a module adopted by FAO?
«The World Tour in 60 days was invented by Sara and Professor Matteo Vignoli. Today is the second phase of a university master with the Bologna business school. The first phase is inspirational. Then they cross 12 countries to learn about good practices in terms of innovation in the food sector. The third is the phase of concreteness and return to the companies “

What are the most interesting experiences collected?
“Stephen Ritz, former principal of a school in the Bronx, with the Green Bronx Machine has educated many street kids at vertical farming and the consumption of vegetables. Or Patrick Brown, inventor of “impossible food” that produces vegetable substitutes for meat and dairy products ».

Now these are bootcamps organized by FAO.
«I still remember when Sara and I were received at FAO and told about the project. We wanted to make a mark and we succeeded. Since 2019 with the FAO we have designed these training camps that have formed more than 300 climate shapers thanks to programs held in New York, Iceland, Marettimo and Pollica “.

Pollica is the latest innovative project.
«It all started from the meeting between the mayor Stefano Pisani, heir of Angelo Vassallo, the fisherman mayor, and Sara Roversi which took place at the Rome station. It was the trigger for a common project between an international ecosystem and a very small community in Italy, iconic of the sustainable lifestyle, which passes through the Mediterranean diet. Pollica and Cilento are also the site of the Eleatic school of Parmenides di Melisso and Zenone ».

From here it was born Paideia: from integral human formation to ecological transition.
“This is the new Future Food Institute project: a campus that aims to safeguard and enhance the cultural and natural heritage that insists on the Mediterranean ecosystem through the commitment of a dynamic and vital community of young people committed to the development of innovation in the field agri-food. We focus on experiential learning: children leave the classroom and study in contact with anchovy fishermen, farmers, buffalo breeders, put their hands in the earth ».

What do all of us who make daily food decisions need to learn?
«We should be aware of the fact that today we are eating what we ourselves have polluted and we pollute by eating. Awareness is already a step towards making sustainable decisions ».

She is also the coordinator of the women’s pact for climate and the environment.
“I am convinced that women play a key role in the match with the climate crisis. There are, in the female figure, seeds of models of care for the planet and models suited to the collective interest of eco-sustainability very far from the egoreferentiality that sometimes characterizes males. It is no coincidence that Greta Thunberg is a woman. Now our level of maturity must lead us to guide these generations from the (just) protest to the proposal ».
