Migrating To Cloud Services Is Essential, But It Still Does Not Alleviate All Corporal Worries

In this highly digitalized world, especially after the new work-from-home trend saw a spike because of the coronavirus pandemic, more companies of all sizes are now endeavoring to move their data to a cloud system. According to the Flexera 2020 State of the Cloud Report, more than 70% of small and medium-sized businesses have already migrated most of their data in a public cloud. And the rest of the companies will also make the move within this year only.

Public cloud applications are providing different tools that make the migration of workload and data for companies of all sizes easy and cost-effective.

SaaS is considered to be the best cloud service application for most companies these days. It is a ‘software as a service,’ application in which there is a subscription-based software license that is given to companies and is centrally hosted. It is also called an ‘On-demand software.’

Amazon Web Services is another option for cloud computing services and a lot more.

Is It All Safe?

However, while there are multiple options for public cloud these days, it is important for organizations to not close their eyes and stop taking any responsibility for their data even after backing it up in a cloud.

Organizations use various means to back up their data for recovery in cases of accidental data loss. They either put it all in discs or tape or for long terms recovery, they use the cloud option. But after migrating their data to the cloud, many companies assume that all the cloud providers and SaaS providers will take full responsibility for their data. Sadly, this notion is not right.

In the recent past, there have been instances when large cloud services like Amazon Web Services faced outages in their servers, and that caused a lot of data of the companies that were being hosted on those servers to e lost for good. It caused a lot of monetary damage to those companies too, along with Amazon Web Services losing the trust of some of its consumers.

So, these types of eventualities can happen with anyone, and had those companies been smart enough to implement another effective data recovery plan along with a secondary backup at their own data centers too, they would not have faced so much loss as they incurred.

Once deleted in the cloud can never be found again

In some unfortunate instances, data from public cloud services also can get deleted by mistake. And this data does not have any backup as per the cloud providers’ policies and over-confidence. So, companies that are using these providers to host their workload and data must have some form of internal backup too to avoid getting hugely affected by these eventualities.

Post-outage protocols often result in risky replication of data

This is another unfortunate situation that goes wrong when the cloud providers try to replicate the lost data due to an outage. It becomes inconsistent and that again is quite risky for the affected businesses.

It is imperative to be aware of what your cloud provider and third parties are offering for data backup and recovery.

Before trusting a cloud service provider with your data, it is important to do thorough research and discuss elaborately the data backup plan that they are providing, along with their strategies for recovery of your lost data.

You must ensure that your provider understands your business needs and your company’s IT environment and is experienced enough to deal with companies of the size and stature like your company.

Secondly, your service provider needs to understand your priorities for various applications. Experts say that you should never trust a service provider who claims that data recovery is simple, and they have the right tools to recover all the data, because it is a lie and not practically possible as of now.

Your backup service provider must be aware of clouds, LANs, WANs, servers, applications, etc.
