Comoros: 14 people are missing after a plane crashed into the sea

Fourteen people are missing after a private jet crashed off the Comoros on Saturday.

Mohamed Mazroui, whose company (Fly Zanzibar Limited) owns the aircraft, a Cessna Caravan, said he was hired by a Comoros airline and was flying from the capital Moroni to the city of Fombani when it fell into the Indian Ocean.

The plane was carrying a total of 14 people, two pilots and 12 passengers. According to the Comoros government, the two pilots were Tanzanians and all the passengers were Comorian nationals.

The private jet disappeared from radar about 2.5 kilometers from its destination, for unknown reasons, Mazroui said.

The Comoros Department of Transportation said debris believed to belong to the fatal plane had been found, adding that the operation was continuing in the sea area.

A senior police official had earlier told reporters in the capital Moroni that three speedboats had been sent to the sea area, searching for survivors, wreckage and passengers’ luggage.
