The United States worries after a meeting between UAE Foreign Minister and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday, State Department spokesman Ned Price said, urging states in the region to carefully consider the “atrocities” committed by Assad.
The meeting was a sign of improving ties between Assad and an Arab state allied with the United States, which once backed rebels trying to overthrow him.
“We are concerned about the reports of this meeting and the signal they are sending,” Price told a news conference. “As we have said before, this government will not show any support for the efforts to normalize or rehabilitate Bashar al-Assad, who is a brutal dictator.”
