At least six people have been killed and 16 injured in a bomb blast inside a restaurant in Beni, a town in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, as stated by its mayor.
A government spokesman said via Twitter that one suicide bomber detonated the explosives with which he was strapped.
“A bomb has just exploded in the city center,” Narsis Mutemba Casale told a local radio station. “For security reasons, I urge residents to stay in their homes,” he added.
A Reuters reporter said he heard the blast around 7pm local time shortly after noon, near the city’s main street. A barrage of fire followed.
The photos posted on social networking sites show corpses and dozens of green chairs scattered on the street. Some are damaged or melted.
