Connectivity promised by Musk to Bolsonaro is not a cheap service, says expert

After the meeting between President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and billionaire Elon Musk, who announced a partnership to bring connectivity to 19,000 Brazilian schools and to help monitor the Amazon, several questions arose about how this connection should take place in the country.

THE CNN technology and security expert Arthur Igreja said that Musk’s strategy of positioning the satellite network and taking internet to any point on Earth is not a cheap service and it will be no different in Brazil.

“We are talking about broadband connectivity that is not a cheap service. This is a point that has been highlighted a lot in recent days. It is a plan that costs more than R$ 500 [por plano]”, he said.

On the other hand, explained Igreja, the arrival of the internet is a leap. “Here in Brazil, in remote regions and also for agribusiness, it would be very important to have this type of connectivity,” she said.

Igreja highlighted that Starlink is already present in Brazil and that bringing the connection to remote places is important.

“These technologies are complementary. [Nos locais] where running cable is not a problem, the best value for money is possibly wired internet. Now, for distant places, between not having internet and having a possibility like Starlink, it is much better to have this partnership that Elon Musk is offering”, he said.

On Friday (20), Bolsonaro said that the partnership with the owner of Starlink, which aims to provide internet connection to 19,000 Brazilian rural schools and environmental monitoring of the Amazon, will help fight deforestation and fires in the region.

“We are going to show that the Amazon is preserved. There are niches of burning and irregular deforestation. But his participation with his satellites will help to preserve it”, declared Bolsonaro.
