Conspiracy theories and unfounded accusations abound after Robert Fitzo's assassination attempt

Following the assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fičo, Slovakia's social media sites are awash with unfounded accusations today, deepening the divisions in local society that have worsened since his return to power. The prime minister remains in hospital “in a serious condition” after being shot by a 71-year-old man who, according to local media, is a politically motivated writer. The suspect is charged with “premeditated attempted murder,” Interior Minister Matus Sutai Estok announced. An avalanche of messages on Slovak and foreign websites quickly tried to link the perpetrator to the liberal opposition or Fico's pro-Russian politics. After the attack, thousands of Slovaks shared messages on Facebook and Telegram falsely claiming the 71-year-old was affiliated with the Progressive Party (PS, opposition) and its leader, Michal Simecka.
