COP26: Thousands of young people on the streets of Glasgow for the climate

Thousands of young people took to the streets of Glasgow today, at the end of the first week of the international climate summit COP26, accusing the world’s powers of inaction in the face of climate deregulation, which threatens their generation and future generations.

Two days of demonstrations are planned in the Scottish city for young people to cry out for climate change, facing the devastating effects of global warming due to greenhouse gas emissions, for which human beings are responsible. activity.

“I hope this day will change things,” said 9-year-old Zara, who lives in Glasgow. “I hope we can plant more trees, have more animals. I believe that every human being can make a difference.”

Many of the young Scots who took part in the mobilization did not go to school today in order to take to the streets of Glasgow with young people from all over the world.

In their hands they held placards with slogans such as “There is no planet B”, while they shouted “If now is not the time, when will it be?”. Residents of the area watched the procession “hung” from their windows or lined up on the side of the road.

Beth Donaldson, a 16-year-old Scotswoman, went with friends to the rally to say that within walking distance of the huge conference center, there are adults in delegations from nearly 200 countries who will decide by 12 November the future of her peers.

“We see on television all these political leaders saying they will act, but we never know what kind of action they will take. It is not their future at stake, but ours,” he said.

Enhanced security measures are in place around the conference center.

Among the protesters was 50-year-old translator Julia Klein, who went to protest with her 10-year-old son.

“They are the new generation that will actually be affected by all this. And they are already aware of that. I want them to have a proper planet. So that they do not have to fight for food or die in fires or floods,” he told AFP. .

After today’s young people, a wider alliance of organizations has called for mobilizations tomorrow, while similar events are expected around the world.
