Coronavirus Exercise in Israel: PM Closed in Nuclear Shelter for ‘Deadly Mutation’

In his war shelter Israel Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and senior officials were arrested on Thursday (11/11) as part of an exercise simulating the outbreak of a deadly new coronavirus mutation.

The prime minister described the “Omega Exercise”, which lasted a day and was named after a fictitious strain of the virus, as a security measure to ensure that Israel was prepared for “any scenario”.

The nuclear shelter in the hills of Jerusalem, known as the “National Management Center”, was also used to coordinate initial measures to stem the first wave of the pandemic in March 2020.

Israel imposed a lockdown in its attempt to tame three waves of the pandemic, but until the fourth wave in June kept the economy and schools open based on measures such as vaccinations, booster doses and protective masks.

What does a killer mutation simulation exercise involve?

The exercise includes mass diagnostics for political and military leaders, hospitalization and a curfew, Bennett’s office said in a statement.

The results of the exercise will be communicated to foreign partners.

“Israel is safe and secure”

According to the announcement “Israel is safe and protected. In order for it to remain so and to ensure the continuation of normalcy, we must continue to closely monitor the situation and be prepared for any scenario. “

The announcement did not indicate anything that suggests the government is awaiting the arrival of a new killer.

In addition, he did not cite as a reason for the exercise the scenario of a possible conflict with an enemy country.

The shelter was built more than a decade ago amid concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and the exchange of missile strikes from Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
