Coronavirus – Portugal: New measures to be imposed, despite high vaccination rate

THE Portugal, one of the countries with the highest vaccination rates in the world, is considering new measures to deal with the resurgence of its epidemic coronavirus.

As stated by the representative of the government Mariana Vieira da Silva in the local media, on the sidelines of an event in Lisbon, “we have to determine what measures will be mandatory” in order not to “let the number of cases skyrocket”.

“We do not envisage drastic measures like the ones taken in the past because citizens are more protected”, mainly due to the high percentage vaccination, he clarified.

The President of Democracy Marcello Rebelo de Souza For his part, he assessed that the return to the obligatory use of a mask outdoors is inevitable, as he stated on Tuesday night.

This measure, imposed in October 2020, came on September 13. The use of the mask continues to be recommended in case of rallies or when it is impossible to observe social distancing, AFP reports.

Negative records in the last 24 hours

It is pointed out that Portugal recorded a new peak on Wednesday 2.527 daily cases while exceeding their limit 500 hospital records, record numbers for the country since the beginning of autumn.

The socialist prime minister Antonio Costa also hinted on Tuesday that the country could reintroduce certain measures, mainly in view of the holidays in the end of the year.

“We have to act now. “The slower we act, the greater the risks,” he warned, but ruled out the possibility of a new state of emergency, which had been in place for almost six months between November and last April.

This emergency regime had allowed taking of measures for the restriction of certain freedoms, such as the quarantine imposed at the beginning of the year when the country was among the most affected by the pandemic.

The government announced that it would take decisions after consulting with experts at its meeting on Friday.

About 86% of the population has been vaccinated

Authorities continue to call on those over 65 to do so third dose of the vaccine. Just above 86% of the population, however, is fully vaccinated.

With a population of 10 million, Portugal has recorded more than 1.1 million cases and 18,283 deaths from the beginning of the pandemic.
