“Unvaccinated pandemic” in Europe worries Fiocruz

Given the increase in the number of cases and deaths in Germany, France, Denmark and Austria, specialists from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) see the Covid-19 scenario in Europe with concern.

In this week’s edition of the Covid-19 Observatory’s bulletin, released this Wednesday (17), the researchers point out that most admissions are for people who have not been vaccinated against the virus.

For Fiocruz, the return of restrictive measures in several parts of Europe is worrying and the institution warns of the need for the population to adhere to immunization.

The current situation in European countries is called by researchers the “unvaccinated pandemic”. This is because the increase in the number of deaths and cases of the coronavirus is registered, mainly in regions where vaccination coverage is not progressing.

The Bulletin points out that, currently, Brazil has about 60% of the population with a complete vaccination scheme, with an estimated 1.15 deaths per 1 million inhabitants.

“Considering that the pandemic is not over and that the virus is still circulating, it is a reason for attention that 40% of the population does not have a complete vaccination schedule, in a context of greater circulation of people on the streets”, say the specialists.

Meanwhile, countries like Lithuania, Austria and Germany have higher percentages of the vaccinated population, 65.2%, 63.7% and 67%, respectively. However, they face a new high in hospitalizations, in addition to the increase in the indicator of deaths per million inhabitants.

At the moment, the indicator for Germany is at 2.23 deaths per 1 million inhabitants, for Austria at 4 and for Lithuania at 10.62, according to the monitor Our World In Data, which specializes in analytical data.

The Bulletin points out that the situation in Brazil is still one of falling indicators, such as confirmed cases, deaths and occupation of beds in the public network.

For the scenario to remain positive, the researchers say that more effective vaccination strategies against the virus are needed. Among them, the requirement for a health passport in closed environments and encouraging campaigns.

Another warning made by the researchers is about the lack of physical distance between Brazilians, both in public transport and in leisure activities. Since July, the circulation of people on the streets has been greater than in the pre-pandemic period and could be even more intensified with the arrival of the holiday season.

Cases and deaths

Between the 7th and 13th of November there was a slight increase in the values of transmission indicators, with a daily average of 11,400 confirmed cases and 260 deaths.

The number represents an increase of 1.9% cases per day and 1.2% of deaths compared to the previous week.
