The Court of Justice of Goiás sentenced doctor Wesley Noryuki Murakami to 9 years and 10 months in prison for causing serious injuries to 8 women and one man, who underwent aesthetic procedures, at a clinic in Goiânia.
Most patients came to Murakami’s clinic to undergo facial harmonization, and after the treatment their faces were deformed. The medical interventions took place between 2013 and 2018.
CNN had access to the judicial decision of the 8th Criminal Court of Crimes Punished by Reclusion and Detention in the District of Goiás. One victim, Fernanda Ferreira, declared to the Court that she underwent facial harmonization with the doctor Wesley Noryuki Murakami, and shortly after the procedure , “the face was swollen and disfigured”. At home, with incessant pain, she was unable to eat.
When contacted by the patient, the doctor stated that the discomfort was normal and that, in a few days, the pain would decrease as well as the swelling. Fernanda went to the doctor’s office twice, who massaged her face and reiterated that the swelling would disappear over time. After 45 days without a solution to the problem, Fernanda looked for a new doctor, who reported numerous irregularities in the procedure. A report confirmed edema and hardening of the malar region.
All of Wesley Noryuki Murakami’s patients reported to the Court that the doctor did not ask for preliminary exams before the procedures and that when faced with reports of intense pain and swelling in the face, the response was always the same. You had to be patient and the symptoms would disappear soon.
In the order, judge Luciano Borges da Silva argued that the victims’ physical integrity was damaged, generating permanent deformities, due to the illicit conduct practiced by the doctor.
The magistrate decided that Wesley Noryuki Murakami could appeal the decision in freedom, as there were no legal requirements for pre-trial detention.
CNN requested a request for an interview with the doctor, but at the time of publication of this article there was no response.
