Covid, the new variant in Italy: what does it mean for the vaccine

The English variant of Covid has been in Italy for a few days. The symptoms are no stronger than the versions already circulating, but there seems to be greater contagiousness and therefore a possibility of replicating faster, even if there is no greater lethality. The Ministry of Health has made it known that “a patient and his partner” are in isolation, after the doctors of the Celio military hospital have sequenced the genome of the new version of Covid.

Only since yesterday afternoon are connections with the United Kingdom are blocked, not only from Italy. All those who arrived in the last 14 days will be subjected to swabs and checks as already happened to those who arrived on the last flights. British health minister Matt Hancock said the situation was “out of control” in the country.

The two people in isolation at Spallanzani are a positive variant, with a high viral load, and a known coronavirus. The swab confirmed the positivity, but only subsequent analyzes showed the mutation of the virus in one of the two. Immediate restrictions and controls on family members. Passengers on their return flight to Italy are also contacted.

The new strain of Sars-CoV-2 is called “VUI-202012/01(Variant under investigation) and was first identified in mid-September in London and Kent. The main mutation is in the spike protein, the one the virus uses to bind to human cells.

Experts don’t have time for vaccine efficacy as the process goes on as planned. The president of the Higher Institute of Health Franco Locatelli, explained it to What’s the weather like: ‘Even if there are mutations in the virus, such as the one reported in Britain and now in other parts of the globe, it is highly unlikely that the effectiveness of the vaccine will be lost. I reassure the Italians by saying that really the answer to get out of this situation is the vaccine, we must place the utmost trust in it both in terms of safety and efficacy ».
