CPI may break fiscal secrecy of pastors, says Senate education committee president

The president of the Education Committee in the Senate, Senator Marcelo Castro (MDB), commented this Wednesday (22), in an interview with CNN , the arrest of the former Minister of Education, Milton Ribeiro. According to Castro, a “CPI of the MEC” would be a valuable instrument to overcome the current crisis in education.

“It can help a lot [uma CPI], because it is a very strong instrument. The commission has police validity, people are obliged to appear, they give evidence under oath and you can also break the confidentiality of these people”, said the senator.

As an example, Castro cited pastors accused of operating a parallel system within the MEC. “You break a bank secrecy on a pastor like that and you find a mountain of money, that’s a scandal,” he says, highlighting the political power of the commissions.

Former Minister of Education Milton Ribeiro was preventively arrested, this Wednesday (22), in Santos. The warrant was issued as part of a Federal Police (PF) operation that took place on Wednesday.

The president of the commission also reinforced that this is not the first time that the National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE) is at risk of being diverted.

According to the PF, the “Acesso Paid” operation aims to investigate the practice of influence peddling and corruption for the release of public funds from the FNDE.
