Criminals impersonate relatives of plane crash victims to commit scams

On social media, criminals are posing as relatives of the victims of the plane that crashed in Vinhedo, in the interior of São Paulo, to commit financial scams. One of the names used in this practice was that of Isabella Santana Pozzuoli, who boarded the Voepass aircraft that crashed this Friday (9).

On Instagram, more than one account is using Pozzuoli’s photos and name asking for financial help. In one story, an alleged scammer asks people to make a transfer to pay for the coffin. In the post, the profile says that it is not in a position to purchase the coffin.

Another user, also using Pozzuoli’s photo, pretends to be the victim’s mother, and in the profile description states that the page is a “fan club”. The account also has a story published warning people not to fall for scams, and in the same text, it also asks for money to buy the coffin. The post claims that the tragedy happened at a difficult financial time.

THE CNN contacted this profile that pretended to be the young woman’s mother offering help with the purchase. Moments after the message was sent, the story was deleted from the account.

Along with 61 other people, Isabella is one of the victims of the crash of Voepass flight 2283, which left Cascavel (PR) and was headed to Guarulhos. The plane that crashed, registration PS-VPB, is an ATR 72-500, with a total capacity of 74 people, including 68 passengers.
