Argentine police have identified the suspect in an apparent assassination attempt on Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner as Fernando Sabag Montiel, a police spokesman told CNN on Friday (2).
Sabag was born on January 13, 1987 in the state of São Paulo and has lived in Argentina since 1993, the country’s migration office told CNN . According to police, Sabag, who was authorized to carry weapons, was arrested in 2021 for “misuse of a weapon” for carrying a large knife in public.
The police also told CNN that the suspect has at least one tattoo with Nazi symbols.
Last month, Sabag was briefly interviewed by a local Argentine television station, Crónica TV, criticizing the appointment of Finance Minister Sergio Massa and the social benefits provided by the government to the unemployed.
Sabag is currently in custody awaiting trial for attempted murder. He was appointed public defender according to two magistrates with knowledge of the case.
