Croatian shopkeepers’ turnover fell by 50% today, according to the tax service, following a call for a boycott by consumer associations to protest the price hike. “The merchants did not imagine such a revolt,” said Josip Keleman, of the consumer association Halo inspektore, which initiated the boycott, with satisfaction. The opposition, trade unions, some ministers and several personalities had also called to support this movement. Right-wing Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic estimated that this boycott is an “important and clear message from citizens who want to monitor and compare prices” with those of other countries. “The (protest) movement will be taken into account during the review of basic necessities whose prices are limited,” he said during a government meeting.
