Cruise lines extend suspension of operations until February 18

The Brazilian Association of Ships and Cruises (Clia) decided, this Monday (31), to maintain the suspension of operations in Brazilian ports until February 18.

The document, first obtained by the CNNshows that the decision aims to analyze the evolution of the pandemic and the impacts of the Ômicron variant of Covid-19.

The current season, which began in November 2021, was expected to attract more than 360,000 tourists, with an impact of BRL 1.7 billion.

In addition, the sector expected to generate more than 24 thousand jobs, involving an extensive chain of segments of the economy, including commerce, food, transport, accommodation, tourist services, agency, receptive and fuel.

Clia had voluntarily decided to suspend operations on January 3rd of this year, until January 21st. On the 12th of this month, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) recommended the definitive suspension of the season for ships in Brazil, which began in November last year.

The suggestion was made to the Ministry of Health and the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic in order to avoid further contamination by the coronavirus. The federal agency considered that “the current scenario is unfavorable to the continuity of cruise ship operations”.

According to the association, out of a total of approximately 130,000 passengers transported between November 5 and January 3, 2021, about 1,100 cases were confirmed, which represents less than 1% of the total number of people served (including guests and crew).
