The Bolivarian Alliance for America (ALBA), a union of 10 Latin American countries founded by Venezuela and Cuba, on Friday condemned the exclusion of some governments from the forthcoming US Summit, after the US announced that it wanted only those present to attend. who “respect democracy”.
The United States, which will host the US Summit (June 6-10 in Los Angeles), has said it will not invite the leaders of Venezuela and Nicaragua, and the coordinator of the summit said it was up to the White House to decide whether to send invitation to Cuba.
Cuban President Miguel Dias-Canel made it clear on Wednesday that he would not attend “under any circumstances” even if invited.
The 10 countries that make up the ALBA – including Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua – issued a statement from Havana in which they stressed that they “reject exclusions and discrimination at the so-called America Summit in Los Angeles.”
They also described the blockade as “arbitrary, ideologically and politically motivated”, noting that “this unilateral decision is a serious and historic setback in the relations (of the countries) of the hemisphere”.
Earlier in the day, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called the forthcoming summit “outlandish” and greeted a group of countries led by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez-Obrador, who “raised his tongue to speak.” of the whole continent “.
The White House and the State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Mexican president, along with the leaders of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Guatemala and Honduras, have threatened to boycott the summit if certain countries are excluded.
A few days ago, Reuters reported that it had confirmed that 13 of the 14 Caribbean countries, with the exception of Cuba, intend to attend the Los Angeles summit.
The Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonzalves, has said in Havana that he has received an invitation to the summit but will not attend.
