Cyprus: Nicos Anastasiades had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Lebanon

In the afternoon, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, in Sharm el-Sheikh, where he went today to participate in the work of the Climate Change Conference COP27, which will take place on November 7 and 8.

The meeting of President Anastasiades with the Prime Minister of Lebanon took place in the presence of the Minister of Energy Natasas Pileidou, the government representative Marios Pelekanos, the Ambassador of the Republic to Egypt Polis Ioannou and official officials.

As stated in a written statement by the government representative Marios Pelekanos, during the meeting, which was held in an extremely friendly atmosphere, the excellent relations of the two countries were discussed which, as it was found on both sides, can be upgraded creating multiple benefits for both countries.

One of the most important issues developed during the meeting is the updating of the agreement between the two countries on the delimitation of the EEZ. The cooperation of the two countries regarding the exploitation of their natural reimgs and the possibilities that appear in this field as a result of the relevant agreement, including natural gas and renewable energy imgs, were also discussed.

The possibility of an electrical interconnection between the two countries was also discussed.

For his part, President Anastasiades assured Prime Minister Mikati that Cyprus will take an initiative within the EU, in order to provide better financial support to Lebanon to deal with the increasing migration flows, a problem that Cyprus also faces, due to the instrumentalization of migration from Turkey.

Mr. Anastasiades informed the Prime Minister of Lebanon about the current situation in Cyprus, while the situation in Lebanon was also discussed. The Prime Minister of Lebanon reiterated his country’s long-standing support for the Cyprus issue based on principles and values.

Finally, he expressed thanks for the agreement reached between the two countries regarding the issue of mutual assistance in extinguishing fires.

Tomorrow, the President of the Republic of Cyprus will participate in the COP27 Summit, where a total of 120 heads of state and government are expected to take part, while on the sidelines an event will be held on the Cyprus initiative to tackle climate change which will be presented by the President of Democracy.

It is noted that in recent years Cyprus has undertaken a relevant initiative to strengthen the coordination and regional cooperation of the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, with the aim of more effectively dealing with the adverse effects of the climate crisis. Taking advantage of the excellent relations that Cyprus has developed with the countries of the region, the initiative concerns, among other things, the development of a Regional Action Plan with the contribution of distinguished scientists.

The said Summit on the initiative of Cyprus will be presided over by President Anastasiades and the President of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, while heads of state or government and other foreign government officials are expected to attend.

At the Summit, the foundations will be laid for the implementation of the actions that have been decided and for the achievement of the goals that have been set.

The President of the Republic is accompanied to Egypt by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Kostas Kadis, the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Natasa Pileidou, the Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos, the Director of the Office of the President of the Republic Pantelis Pantelidis, the Deputy Government Spokesperson Niovi Parisian and service factors.

The Advisor to the President of the Republic on Climate Change Dr. Costas Papanikolas will also attend and speak at the Summit on the Cyprus Initiative. Also, on the sidelines of the work of the Synod, President Anastasiades is expected to have contacts with leaders of states and governments.

In particular, the President of the Republic will attend the opening ceremony of the Summit tomorrow, November 7, at noon, while in the evening he will attend a reception hosted by the President of Egypt in honor of the heads of state and government participating in the Summit.

On Tuesday, November 8, at 10am, the President of the Republic will attend and speak at the event for the Cyprus initiative, at the venue of COP27.

Subsequently, President Anastasiades will have a meeting with the President of Armenia, Vahan Khatsiatourian, during which a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the field of Environmental Protection will be signed by the respective competent Ministers of the two countries, in the presence of the two Presidents. Then the President of the Republic will intervene in the proceedings of the COP27 Summit.
