Cyprus: The danger of division is visible, the embarrassment of the EU

Turkey’s growing interest in the Mediterranean and the Middle East has brought Cyprus to the forefront of Tayyip Erdogan’s expansionist policies.

Turkish President now openly promotes division and seeks to create new accomplishments, who will bring him with more bargaining weapons to his quiver. The opening of Famagusta will be one of them, when – inevitably, the dialogue for the settlement of the Cyprus problem is restarted, but also for the upgrading of the Customs Union with Europe. Anyway, a big bargain of the neighbors with the USA, Russia, but also Europe is in progress. So the basis of the dialogue that Ankara is promoting is completely different, much more aggressive, than the one we have been facing so far from the Turkish side. If we do not react in a flash There is a danger that the two-state solution will gradually gain ground in part of the international community, at a time when the neighboring country is experiencing a predominance of nationalism in internal political dialogue.

The embarrassment and wishful thinking of the European Union, with the dominance of the strong bilateral relations of some Member States over a common policy of restraining Turkish expansionist policy, show a Union that is weak and politically incompatible with its great economic power.. But the United States is also taking advantage of developments in Cyprus to push Turkey to change its stance on Russia and Iran and return to a purely NATO role. In fact, there is a danger that, in the event of a rapprochement between Ankara and Washington, the Americans will put pressure on us to comply with the demands of the Turks in return. There is, therefore, no Baintenopoulos. There is Biden, an American president who obviously looks after the interests of his country and can become Bidenoglu at any time.

The development of our deterrent capability and diplomatic pressure should be our main and essential axes of reaction. The upgrading of our weapons systems and the ongoing reorganization of the army should be accelerated. At the same time, it should be made clear to everyone that upgrading Euro-Turkish relations without a tangible, real change of course on the part of Ankara is impossible, no matter how much pressure is put on us. Let’s not forget that the adoption of the Customs Union with Turkey was combined with the prerequisite from Greece for the entry of Cyprus into the Union. Let its upgrade be a new opportunity for us to claim the enforcement of international law. End, Strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations with all those countries affected by Turkish expansion is the only way. A Turkish drone base in northern Cyprus, for example, would also pose a threat to Israel.
