Daylight saving time: government agency recommends return and final decision will be made by Lula

After a meeting held by the main authorities in the electricity sector in Rio de Janeiro, this Thursday (19), Minister Alexandre Silveira, of Mines and Energy, informed that the government proposes the return of daylight saving time . The final decision will be made by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

From the point of view of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, daylight saving time will help prevent increasingly expensive thermal power plants from being activated, as well as helping to get out of the red flag earlier than expected. Now, a series of meetings will be held with other ministries to discuss the issue.

The meeting took place at the National Electric System Operator (ONS) building in Rio.

The committee is made up of the main authorities in the electricity sector: minister and secretaries of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), National Electric System Operator (ONS) and Energy Research Company, among others.

Discontinued in 2019

Daylight saving time was abolished in 2019, in the first year of the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), under the claim that energy savings were low and did not justify the measure.

By moving the clock forward by one hour in the summer months, natural light is taken advantage of for an extended period.

This way, when a large part of the population arrives home after work, the need to turn on appliances such as electric lights decreases, which can reduce demand.

In cities, urban public lighting also comes on later than usual, relieving the load.

In recent years, sectors such as restaurants and hotels have advocated daylight saving time to improve their commercial activity.
