A closure on Avenida 23 de Maio affected vehicle traffic after a fire hit an overpass in downtown São Paulo on Thursday afternoon (19). The blockage has already caused four kilometers of slow traffic.
In a statement, the Traffic Engineering Company (CET) recommended that drivers avoid the road due to the flames that reached the lower part of the Condessa de São Joaquim viaduct. The runway towards the airport is completely blocked .
According to the latest update from CET, at 3:43 pm, one lane on the left has already been released and the Fire Department remains on site.

Fire blocks traffic
A fire hit a viaduct in São Joaquim, over Avenida 23 de Maio, in downtown São Paulo, and caused traffic to be closed in the region on the afternoon of this Thursday (19).
According to the State Civil Defense, the fire was allegedly caused by homeless people and reached objects and debris, causing excessive smoke.

Firefighters were called and remain on site fighting the fire. So far, there have been no reports of casualties.
The area is still heavily smoked due to burning materials. The Emergency Management Center is monitoring the situation.
