Democrats launch Biden ads in Milwaukee ahead of Republican convention

The Democratic Party has placed ads on dozens of Milwaukee buses ahead of the Republican convention that will be held in the city next week, most featuring images of a popular meme featuring U.S. President Joe Biden, even as he is currently trying to revive his re-election campaign.

More than 50 buses will carry the ads during the Republican convention, which will be held from July 15 to 18, according to the Republican National Committee. Biden’s opponent, Donald Trump, is expected to be officially announced as the Republican Party’s nominee for the November 5 presidential election at the convention.

It is not unusual for a political party to launch such an ad campaign during its opponent’s convention, but the Democrats’ message comes amid calls for Biden to drop out of the race after a poor debate performance that raised questions about his mental fitness.

The launch of the ads has been in the works for months, the committee said, well before the June 27 debate.

Biden defeated Trump in Milwaukee by a landslide of nearly 60 percentage points, but won Wisconsin by fewer than 21,000 votes out of 3.2 million cast. Wisconsin is expected to be a crucial battleground state in this year’s election again.

The ads focus on abortion rights, lowering the cost of prescription drugs and the recent criminal conviction of Trump, who just weeks ago called Milwaukee “a horrible city” in a closed-door meeting, according to news reports.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said the statement was inaccurately described and that Trump was talking about how “crime and voter fraud are terrible.”

The ads show Biden with red laser eyes, mimicking the popular “Dark Brandon” meme, which began as a right-wing slogan to associate Biden with conspiracy theories but was used by Democrats to support Biden.

“Get real, Jack. I will bring back Roe,” one ad reads, referencing the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade case that recognized a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. The court’s conservative majority includes three justices appointed by Trump.

“This year, the survival of our democracy is on the ballot, along with protections for fundamental freedoms, affordable health care, affordable medicine and good-paying jobs,” said Rosemary Boeglin, communications director for the Democratic National Committee, whose convention will be held in Chicago in August.

“There is only one candidate who will protect them: President Joe Biden.”
