Denmark wants to rent prison cells in Kosovo to send 300 detainees there, the government said today, presenting a new plan to tackle overcrowding in penitentiaries.
The plan calls for the rental of 300 places in Kosovo prisons, where foreigners will be sent to be extradited to their countries of origin after serving their sentences, according to the justice ministry.
In 2020, about 350 detainees were extradited from Denmark to other countries.
The government also plans to increase the capacity of penitentiaries by 326 places, from 2022 to 2025.
Since 2015, the number of detainees in Denmark has increased by 19%, who at the beginning of 2021 had exceeded 4,000. This means that all prison posts were occupied. During the same period, the number of guards decreased by 18%. Denmark, a country of 5.8 million people, is known for its “open” prisons, where those who have been sentenced to less than 5 years in prison serve their sentences.
“We will be missing up to 1,000 places in the penitentiary system by 2025,” said Minister Nick Heckerup in a statement.
According to the World Prison Brief of the University of London, there were 1,642 inmates in Kosovo in 2020 and the prison rate was 97%.
In the past, Norway and Belgium had rented cells in the Netherlands and sent prisoners there.
