Despite US sanctions, China’s Huawei Technologies Co has retained its title as the world’s leading telecommunications equipment supplier in 2021, according to research firm Dell’Oro Group.
According to preliminary estimates, the overall telecommunications equipment market grew by 7% in 2021, recording growth for the fourth year in a row. Growth was underpinned by rising wireless revenues and strong demand for wireline-related equipment. Total global telecom equipment revenues approached $100 billion, up more than 20% since 2017.

The analysis in these reports shows that the combined global share of top vendors has remained relatively stable between 2020 and 2021, with the top seven vendors accounting for about 80% of the total market.
The US government’s ongoing efforts to restrict the use of Huawei equipment are affecting the company’s position outside of China. Despite this, Huawei continued to lead the global market, emphasizing its power in the Chinese market, the depth of its telecommunications portfolio, and the strength of its existing position.

Outside of China, the situation is as follows: the share of Ericsson and Nokia is almost equal to 20%, while the share of Huawei is about 18%. Global telecommunications equipment growth is expected to decline from 7% in 2021 to 4% in 2022.
