Digitimes Research estimates that shipments in the largest smartphone market doubled in annual terms last quarter

Experts from the analytical company Digitimes Research have calculated that 94.6 million smartphones were shipped in the Chinese market in the first quarter of 2021. This indicator increased in comparison with the previous quarter by 9%, and in comparison with the first quarter of last year – by 99.6%.

Smartphone shipments from Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo were all-time high in the first quarter, according to Digitimes Research. The shortage of semiconductor products and other components did not prevent Chinese manufacturers, since the necessary stocks were made ahead of time.

It is noteworthy that only five companies – Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei and Apple – occupy 91.8% of the market. And if you add Honor to the top five, the total share of the top six brands is 98%. At the same time, shipments of Huawei smartphones in the first quarter continued to decline, and shipments of smartphones Honor, a subsidiary of Huawei, have not yet gone on sale in significant volumes, as the manufacturer plans to release mass segment models only in the second quarter.

Analysts predict that most brands, with the exception of Honor, are likely to face reduced shipments in the second quarter due to shortages of parts and components. Overall, smartphone shipments in China in the second quarter will be 19.3% less than in the first quarter.
