Distance learning contributes to the loss of quality of education, says teacher

Data from the National Student Performance Exam (Enade) 2021, released by the Ministry of Education last Tuesday (13), show the disparity in quality between face-to-face and distance education (EAD).

The evaluation is by the professor at Unicamp’s Faculty of Education, Ângela Soligo.

In an interview with CNN Radio she states that, although more people are studying at a distance, the academic performance of this type of education is lower.

“In face-to-face teaching, the number of places that can be offered is limited, because it depends on infrastructure. Distance learning expands the number of available places, but loses in quality”, he says.

Ângela Soligo argues that “over the last few years we have been seeing the general precariousness of Higher Education in Brazil, in a very strong way. This movement also comes through EAD.”

For her, this position is not a matter of personal positioning: “The data are consolidated by research.”

“We need to be concerned, and talk about it seriously, so as not to let the training of our youth, and our professionals, be precarious and destroyed.”

One of the exam’s quality indicators is the Enade Concept, which gives grades from 1 to 5 per undergraduate course, with 5 being the highest grade.

According to data from the last assessment, most courses (39.7%) scored 3.

In distance education courses, 41.6% of the courses scored 2.

According to Ângela Soligo, the difference between the results of the two modalities involves multiple factors, but the main one is the format.

“In person, teachers are in contact with the student all the time, in the classroom and outside it. From a distance, there is no interaction because the classes are recorded, making the activities not synchronous,” she points out.

The synchronous activity is the live class, which “allows the student to ask questions on the spot, ensuring communication between students”, according to the teacher.

Asynchronous is the recorded class, the most recurrent in the distance learning modality.
