DNA results prove that babies were exchanged in the maternity ward

The result of the new DNA test carried out to identify whether babies born in a hospital in Inhumas, in the Metropolitan region of Goiânia (GO), were in fact exchanged in the maternity ward, proved the exchange. The information was confirmed to CNN by the defenses of the children’s parents, this Friday (13).

The error in exchanging the babies was discovered after Yasmim – the mother of one of the children – carried out a DNA test after her husband, in the process of divorce, requested a genetic test as a way of proving the child’s paternity. The genetic material was then removed from the supposed parents for analysis in October this year.

In a statement, the Civil Police of Goiás stated that the investigation into the case remains confidential.

DNA test and testimonials

At the beginning of this month, the delegate monitoring the case requested that the new DNA test be carried out in an action filed for damages in relation to the case.

According to lawyer Kuniyoshi Fagundes Watanabe, who represents the father of one of the children involved, investigations are still ongoing and, to date, all victims have been interviewed. “Among the next steps, we are awaiting the results of new DNA tests to confirm the biological affiliations and enable the preparation of the final report,” stated Watanabe.

In a note, the defense also claims that “regarding the possibility of exchanging the children, we emphasize that this is an extremely sensitive topic and is being treated with the utmost care”.

According to Márcio Rocha, lawyer who represents Yasmim Kessia and Isamara Cristina, the children’s two mothers, last Tuesday (10) and this Wednesday (11), one of the hospital’s nurses and the children’s parents gave a statement to the police.

Baby Swap

Yasmim Kessia, the mother who had her son changed after giving birth, even took a photo with her biological son minutes after the baby was born. She discovered the exchange in a divorce process after her husband requested a genetic test to prove the child’s paternity. The genetic material was then removed from the supposed parents for analysis in October this year.

The result came at the end of the month, surprising everyone because Yasmim was not the baby’s biological mother, as her son’s DNA was not compatible with her own, as the result showed. The exams were repeated and the outcome was the same: Yasmim and her partner were not the child’s biological parents.

After discovering the error, the mother, together with her lawyer, looked for the other family who had been in the same hospital room during Yasmim’s birth. The other mother, Isamara Cristina, together with her husband then underwent a DNA test which confirmed that both were not the biological parents of the child they had raised over the last three years.

At a press conference, Yasmin stated that she did not imagine this could happen. She further reported that came into contact with one of those responsible for the hospital to explain the situation and said that he did not want to exchange the babies.

“Then he told me that, in these cases, the ideal was to take the case ‘under the table’ and not take [o bebê] to another family and that I would have to live with this situation”, said Yasmin.

When questioned, the hospital expressed itself in a note and said that it cooperates with the investigations, sending all the necessary documents. Furthermore, the unit highlighted the sensitivity of the incident and says it treats the episode with “due importance”, investigating the error.

The day of birth

According to lawyer Márcio Rocha, who represents both mothers, Yasmim Kessia and Isamara Cristina, on the day they gave birth, at first, they were taken to the same room in the ward of the Women’s Hospital, located in Goiânia.

Yasmin gave birth first, but only a few minutes apart from Isamara. When she felt ill and was sedated, she never returned to the room where Isamara was also hospitalized. At the time, Yasmim was taken to an apartment due to Covid-19 protocol, as the children were born during the pandemic in 2021.

When Yasmin woke up, her son was already in the room with his grandmother. At the time of her birth, the lawyer states that there was no family companion inside the operating room. Later, Isamara also welcomed her son in another hospital room.

According to the defense, it appears that the babies would have been exchanged between the period after birth and the journey to the nursery, before being taken to their mothers in their respective rooms. The case remains under investigation.
