The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning in April about severe acute hepatitis in children, and about 300 cases have been reported in at least 20 countries since the beginning of last month. In Brazil, more than 20 possible cases of the disease are investigated in seven states of the country, according to a survey carried out by the CNN with the State Health Departments.
Hepatitis is an inflammatory disease that affects the liver. The most common symptoms are weakness, abdominal pain, feeling sick, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dark urine, yellow eyes and skin (jaundice), and whitish stools. Although the cause of the new outbreak has not been identified, doctors have ruled out that the infection could be related to the Covid-19 vaccination.
In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents a balance of what is known so far about the outbreak of severe acute hepatitis in children. To describe the challenges posed by the new cases and the care needed to deal with the disease, infectious disease specialist Raquel Muarrek, from Hospital São Luiz, and hepatologist Cristiane Villela Nogueira, a professor at UFRJ, participate in this episode.
