DW: Cyprus – The surveillance scandal is a pre-election issue

Evidence continues to come to light about the interconnection of Cyprus with the scandal of surveillance of politicians and journalists in Greece. New revelations.

More and more evidence linking Cyprus to the surveillance scandal in Greece is coming to light, while there are more and more voices calling for a new investigation into the case.

In a front page article, the newspaper “Fileleftheros” reveals that three of the companies investigated in Greece by the National Transparency Authority for the wiretapping case have Greek Cypriot officials.

All three companies, according to the publication, were the subject of EAD investigations on the occasion of the surveillance against the Greek journalist Thanasis Koukakis. According to “Filelefthero”, all three companies are connected to the company Intellexa, which is controlled by former Israeli agent Tal Dilian, owner of the infamous black van that occupied Cyprus in 2019.

The scandal enters the pre-election period

In the meantime, the connection between Cyprus and the surveillance scandal in Greece seems to occupy the political life of the country and in view of the presidential elections in February.

Already the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and independent candidate, Nikos Christodoulidis, issued a statement noting that he considers it “a legal and moral obligation of the state to investigate any connection between Cyprus and the case”.

A possible return of the debate on surveillance to the center of the political life of Cyprus, would oblige his opponent, Mr. Christodoulidis, President of DISY Averof Neophytos, to reposition himself and his party’s relationship with Avraam Sahak Avni, owner of company NCIS Intelligence and a close associate of Dilian, as Mr. Avni’s company had installed a security system in the building facilities of DISY in 2019.
