A fatal 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook southern Turkey early on Monday, toppling buildings and sending residents running into the streets as aftershocks rippled across the region.
At least 670 people died. Nearly 3,000 people were injured epat least 34 buildings collapsed, according to preliminary data.
The earthquake struck 23 km east of Nurdagi in Gaziantep province at a depth of 24.1 km, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.
Nurdagi is located along the Turkey-Syria border and the earthquake was felt in several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon.
The deaths were reported in Aleppo, Hama and Latakia regions, SANA said.
With the presence of Lula, Alckmin and Dilma, Mercadante takes office at the BNDES this Monday (6)
Aloizio Mercadante assumes the presidency of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) this Monday (6), in a ceremony that will be attended by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and of former president Dilma Rousseff (PT).
The ceremony will take place at 10 am at Teatro Arino Ramos Ferreira, at the bank’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.
The BNDES board of directors had approved Mercadante’s name for the position on January 25th. Previously, an order from the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) endorsed the nomination.

“The US used force to attack our unmanned civilian airship, which is an obvious overreaction. We express solemn protest against this action from the US side,” Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Tan Kefei said in a statement Sunday afternoon local time.
China “reserves the right to use whatever means necessary to deal with similar situations,” he added.
Ibaneis Rocha must appeal removal to the STF this week
The defense of the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB), intends to appeal to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) the removal of the Chief Executive later this week. The statement is from the lawyer Cleber Lopes, who represents the politician.
“Notwithstanding all this, the defense considers that the investigation has already shown all the circumstances of what happened before, during and after the events of January 8 and, consequently, that it is time for the governor to be reappointed to his mandate. At the end of the investigation, we wait for it to be archived”, says the note sent by Lopes and Alberto Toron, who is also a member of the defense.
According to Oliveira, the defense will include among the arguments the revocation of the preventive detention of the former General Commander of the Military Police, Fábio Augusto Vieira.
